LITURGY

At Saint Francis Xavier we believe that “the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows” (CCC 1074)

Liturgies, Eucharistic and non- Eucharistic, are celebrated with the parish of Saint Francis Xavier and often with our sister-school, Saint Augustine’s, Baxter. We encourage the parents to join us in prayer for these occasions as we believe that the parish priest, teachers, parents and parishioners all support the faith education of our students.

As liturgy is considered central to our faith, the students are provided with many experiences of belonging to a community of believers. On-going participation in liturgy is essential and therefore we provide a range of Eucharistic and non-Eucharistic liturgies in which children can participate.
We gather together for class and school liturgies to celebrate various events (Opening of the School Year, Ash Wednesday, Feast of the Sacred Heart, Feast of the Assumption, Mission Week, Family Week, Feast of Saint Francis Xavier, End of Year Thanksgiving). Special seasons such as Advent and Holy Week, together with school assemblies provide opportunities for the whole school to celebrate together.

Class/ level Masses are scheduled once per term to be celebrated with the parish community. The purpose of the children's participation is to:

    • become familiar with and an active participant in the liturgy.
    • witness, experience and contribute to the celebration of a Parish Liturgy.
    • be a visible, celebrating part of the Saint Francis Xavier Parish.
    • provide an opportunity for the children to develop in their relationship with God and
    • experience the living Jesus in the Word, the Community, the Eucharist and in their own hearts.
