Prayer Policy
At St. Francis Xavier we believe that prayer is:
• The turning of our awareness to the presence of God in our lives.
• Being open to relationship with God.
• Our response to God’s invitation to this relationship of love and communion.
• The whole person bringing one’s life before God, aware of one’s own needs and those of others and the world.
• Vital for a teacher to model to their students daily. Teachers have a responsibility not only to teach their students about faith, but also to enable them to experience a living faith. Teachers provide an important opportunity for faith experience when they pray with their students.Prayer experiences at St Francis Xavier School:
STAFF:
We have a responsibility to give witness to the value of prayer in our relationship with God.
Therefore as a staff we will set time aside to become a praying community:
- at Staff Meetings especially for special events or tragedies
- leading prayer at student assemblies and Parent Nights
- sharing prayer with our sister school staff, St Augustine’s
- sharing prayer at Cluster Professional Learning Meetings or daysSCHOOL COMMUNITY:
At St. Francis Xavier we believe that prayer should be a natural part of everyday life.
We gather regularly and prayer is a focus at each sessions eg.
- Beginning and ending of the day including meal prayers.
- Spontaneous prayer
- Special feast days
- Quiet times as part of a lesson
- Times of communal sadness/happiness
- Assemblies, School meetings, Prep Prayer and PJ Night
RELIGIOUS IDENTITY:
Each class is required to clearly display and use: a prayer “table”, Bible, crucifix, candle, cloth, other religious symbols or icons.Praying in the Classroom:
It is essential that students, staff and parents experience a wide variety and diversity of prayer experiences: vocal, meditative and contemplative
Over a year there should be provision for:
- Formal and informal prayer times
- Liturgical or non-liturgical
- The use of Scripture
- Engaging the senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, taste
- Time, space, music, lighting, décor, visuals and symbols
-Appropriate positioning and posture
